Mr Des Browne - Appointed as special envoy for Sri Lanka by UK

On February 12 2009, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom appointed the Right Honorable Des Browne MP as his Special Envoy for Sri Lanka to focus on the immediate humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka and the Government of Sri Lanka’s work to set out a political solution to the ethnic conflict.

But the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cabinet said the appointment was “unhelpful” and was made without consulting them. A foreign ministry statement said the appointment was tantamount to an “intrusion of Sri Lanka’s internal affairs”. accusing the UK “unilaterally” appointing him.
However any political observer can conclude that the appointment of Special Envoy only shows the historical continuity of the close involvement of UK in the politics of the Sri Lanka in the last two centuries .and if watched in that context it is clearly understood that Sri Lanka is accusing UK for interference only to cover up the failure of the Sri Lankan state in their commitments towards the Tamil people.

Portuguese took possession of the island in 1505 when there were Two Sovereign Sinhalese kingdoms in the south west and One Sovereign Tamil Kingdom in the north east OF Sri Lanka. Dutch usurped control in 1658 and British took over only in 1796.

In 1799 , Sir Hugh Cleghorn, the first British Colonial Secretary wrote to the British Government… ….Two different nations from a very ancient period have divided between them the possession of the Island. First the Sinhalese, inhabiting the interior of the country in its Southern and Western parts, and secondly the Malabars (Tamils) who possess the Northern and Eastern Districts. These two nations differ entirely in their religion, language and manners…..

It is to be noted that Portuguese and Dutch ruled the Tamil and Sinhala Kingdoms separately, but, the British artificially joined them for their administrative convenience only in 1833. However in 1948 British left the Island leaving it as one country, Ceylon.

It is a Historical mistake of the British empire to hand over the sovereignty of Tamil Land which they usurped in 1796 to the Sinhalese in 1946. Therefore the UK has to address the injustice it has caused to the Tamil speaking population in Sri Lanka. Particularly when the authorities of the Sri Lankan Government are openly declaring that the island belongs to Sinhala only, rejecting the existence of Tamil Home Land in the north and east of the island, whatever agreement Sinhalese have signed with the British empire in 1946 has become null and void which brings the UK to have a reason to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka.

Therefore the people of the Tamil Nation in Sri Lanka have great expectations with Mr. Des Browne and are eagerly waiting to see what kind of steps he could take to end the genocide of Tamils and to restore the sovereignty of Tamil nation in Sri Lanka. This is the responsibility of the Queen of the United Kingdom which could not be absolved any more.

Sabash! The ignorance on srilanka’s past is tiring. Some question how can you go to another country and ask for a country. Multiple articles are needed to raise our understanding on this issue.

  2. Sunderapandyan says:

Obviously Sri Lanka wants international assistance but not international standards. Thank you for providing the historical references.

After reading this news today, Tamils should be wondering whether Intrnational Community could in anyway help Tamils?

This is the news from the Hindu.

“Sri Lanka has politely declined ‘offers of assistance’ made by India and the United States to evacuate civilians trapped in the 35-km. territory still under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama conveyed the government’s decision to visiting British Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox last week.

The nature of ‘offers’ made by New Delhi and Washington is not clear as neither have spelt out how they intended to assist Colombo in evacuation of the stranded citizens.

We do not know what kind of politeness is still with GOSL.

I hope the world community wakes up and understands the Srilankan situation and save the lives of common man. UK & USA together can play a much bigger role in resolving the crisis.

One of my friend’s friend wrote the following – I thought of sharing with you. “since the world is now truly Global, it really does not matter whether another Tamilan comes to help them or a Norwegian or Canadian..is it a matter of shame that another Tamilan does not support peace there with equal rights to Tamils, it sure is…but if people give explanations to themselves, to live with it, there is no stopping that either..”

  6. Ronin says:

With the current ADMK and DMK, it is better to trust the Norwegians and UK rather than our local leaders..

  7. malarthamil says:

Ronin, I already lost hope in local and national politicians. That is why I believe that UK has the responsibility to intervene.

Sasi, if it is a matter of shame that another Tamilian does not support peace, what can we call amother Tamilian like Karuna supporting the Genocideof GOSL and the Indian Tamilians supporting a Government which gives moral and military suport to GOSL?

Look at the support issue like this.
    1. Support Ealem Tamils , Oppose LTTE
    2. Support Ealem Tamils and LTTE
    3. Support Sri Lankan Government oppose LTTE
    4. Oppose Sri Lankan Government and oppose LTTE

Tamils are seen in all categories

    1. DMK, AIADMK, Congress, Communists
    2. MDMK, PMK, VCK, Nedumaran and other Tamil Nationalists
3.Congress Party, DMK, PMK, Government of India
    4.Some Non Resident Ealem Tamils.

The overlapping of 1 and 3 is due to double standards of these parties and collective responsibility of participation in a Government and evading such responsibility utilising the political Innocence of Tamils.

BRUSSELS: More than 5,000 Tamils from across Europe have protested close to European Union headquarters demanding quick action to stop the bloodshed Tamil protestors hold banners in central Brussels.

They called for the European Union to immediately lift a ban on the Tamil Tigers, who have been on a terror list for three years. Several protesters on Monday carried pictures of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

  9. Sasikumar says:

Karuna will surely find his place in the history along with Eattappan. I don’t want waste my time further in writing about the Traitor. It is unfortunate to see that still many of the Tamils in India are having lack of understanding about the Eelam issue. As Ronin commented to one of your article – we need to have few more articles to clear the false belief and wrong assumptions of Eelam.
